This ecosystem once covered millions of acres across America, and today less than one percent survives intact making it one of the most threatened ecosystems on Earth. Erased by development, agriculture, and a long history of neglect, these prairies weren’t just scenery for manifest destiny. They were the lifeblood of cultures and the home of many creatures for millennia. We have done our darndest to destroy Big Bluestem and yet it persists on the peripheries, simultaneously representing everything that is wrong with America and everything that is great about it. Those deep, perennial root systems living and dying every year built the deep rich soils that became the Midwest agricultural complex that we exploit today. If left undisturbed those prairie soils would have stored more carbon below ground than most old growth forests do above. Big Bluestem is living infrastructure doing the job of carbon sequestration, erosion protection, rain infiltration, drought resiliency, food for animals, homes for insects, beauty and mythology. Now imagine that power harnessed in your community. In a pinch they can be used as toilet paper. Like many other asters the stem-leaves become smaller and narrower as they ascend up the sometimes-reddish stem. Those slightly hairy zig zagging stems terminate in a flower spray in late summer or early fall that is usually a flat-topped collection of white to purplish rays and yellow centers that turn reddish brown with time. Bloom color is highly variable but given the proper conditions this plant will produce an excellent show of flowers and fall foliage.

Fruits and Seeds: Small tan‑brown achenes topped with a soft white pappus. In hot, exposed sites it will merely survive and not thrive. In deep shade it will not bloom but will persist as a ground cover. Leafhoppers, planthoppers, and juvenile Orthoptera move through the lower growth, and the creeping rhizomes and leaf litter around the plant provide shelter for minute spiders, tiny beetles, psyllids, thrips, lacewing larvae, and other micro‑arthropods that overwinter in plants. The bark is smooth dark reddish brown when young, eventually turning grey and fissured with scales as it ages. The bark is highly ornamental and provides excellent texture in a closed canopy situation or when paired with contrasting leafy textures. Leaves are oval, finely serrated, glossy (glabrous) above, with a pale underside and have a gorgeous orange fall color. Spring flowers form in slender, drooping racemes of small white blooms. The fruit orients itself in those same clusters, forming red and maturing to black. This tree is prized by woodworkers for its strong tight grains and beautiful heartwood color. You can build a guitar neck or inlay a desk in 20 years if you plant it today.

Fruits and Seeds: Fruits are glossy red to black drupes containing a single hard seed. They ripen mid‑ to late summer hence the botanical name, Serotina derived from the Latin serōtinus, meaning “happening late” or “cherry that comes late”. The cherries are loved by birds. Despite common misconceptions, the fruit is also edible to humans, but seeds contain Hydrogen cyanide. Do not break or chew the seeds because you can potentially release the cyanide into your system. One seed probably won’t kill you but eating them like fistfuls of almonds will surely make you sick. If you eat a seed whole it will likely pass through you with no problem as this is a design feature of this plant. Remember birds eat them whole every year and still somehow house cats are the biggest threat to their safety. Some trees have highly palatable fruit while others are gross. In urban and suburban yards, the fruit will be so high on the tree you’ll never get it, but in wide open sunny spaces the branches will be low to the ground giving you an advantage over the birds. But it will disappear form the garden in a few years as other plants grow up and take over.

Looks great in winter too. Avian species have diet diversity in their ranks, with herbivores, carnivores, insectivores, and omnivores or those who indulge in delicacies like insects, leaf buds and even flower nectar. Support this diversity by planting living bird feeders! This kit features a mix of plants that make food specifically for birds but also includes insect host plants that make food for the insects that birds eat. The fundamentals of ecology are centered on the distribution of energy and this starts with plants that harness the sun’s energy and turn it into food that other organisms can use. Plants eat light, insects eat plants, birds eat bugs, these are the building blocks to the web of life. Invite hummingbirds, finches, nuthatches, and chickadees to the buffet of life with this kit.

This kit requires Full to Part Sun conditions with Medium to Wet moisture conditions.

Recommended for 30 - 50 sq. ft.

What’s in Each Kit

18x perennial and biennial plants in 3.5" pots (*NOTE: 2.5" Substitutions below)

4–6x different species, depending on which kit you choose

30–50% graminoids (grasses, sedges, rushes)

Pricing & Savings

Cost: $120

Base kit Includes 18x - 3.5" pots

*If 3.5" stock runs short, you may receive two 2.5" POWER PLUGS for any one missing 3.5" plant — same value, just smaller pots.

If you bought these plants individually, you would spend $135 for the same 18x 3.5” plants, or $126 for 36x POWER PLUGS — so the kit saves you money right away despite the size of the pot you receive.

Why kits make sense:

Instant money savings.

Instant garden design.

Instant ecological impact.

Why we changed our Grower’s Kit format from 2025 to 2026? Don’t just plant turf on top of it. Use native plants to make this space pull double dooty by absorbing those extra nutrients and turning them into something that isn’t a waste. Your infrastructure can serve you and the ecosystem, by creating food and habitat for wildlife. Prior to purchasing this mix please consult with your local codes. While native plants do have deeper roots than turf grass, the roots of these plants won’t tap into the wet septic network underneath them because they prefer drier conditions. A beautiful landscape that tows the line between forest and grassland. Debates abound, is it a woodland? Or is it an open canopy forest? Regardless, the Oak Savana subsection of Minnesota spans 1,819,571 acres across parts of 11 different counties. It is a hugely diverse ecosystem dotted by Oaks, Pines and Poplar with an open canopy that allows a mix of grasses and forbs to populate the ground layer. Inspired by the rolling hills of Burnsville this kit shines a spotlight on a forgotten ecosystem by combining bunch grasses and prairie flowers with sun and drought tolerant woodland species. When you plant an oak you should plant it with its friends like sedges, asters and goldenrods

This kit contains 1x Oak sapling per kit.

This kit requires Full to Part Sun conditions with medium moisture conditions.

Recommended for 30 - 50 sq. ft.

What’s in Each Kit

18x perennial and biennial plants in 3.5" pots (*NOTE: 2.5" Substitutions below)

4–6x different species, depending on which kit you choose

30–50% graminoids (grasses, sedges, rushes)

1x Oak tree sapling!

Why kits make sense:

Instant money savings.

Instant garden design.

Instant ecological impact.

Why we changed our Grower’s Kit format from 2025 to 2026? The 2026 kits now features larger 3.5" pots because they lead to higher success rates!
