Abstract:

Foraging has become a buzz word in recent years, but many people don’t have the time, skillset, knowledge base or capability to walk out into the woods and start eating. Consider looking around you, going out your backdoor and collecting food that wasn’t grown in a raised bed, under the dripping sweat of your brow. Urban and suburban yards often function as edgelands, the most bountiful parts of nature, so harness that benefit by enhancing your garden with self-sustaining and edible native plants. Preston Drum will tell stories about his son’s berry-stained face and shares insights on how to turn your garden into a resilient and low intervention food factory. Share in the gifts of nature or just be lazy and leave it for the birds.

Bio:

Born and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina, Drum relocated to Minnesota in 2012 to build a career as a visual artist and educator. His paintings, sculptures, videos, installations and public artworks are often site-specific and collaborative, framing the audience as a participant in the art. His work has been exhibited throughout the Midwest and Southern United States at venues such as Rochester Art Center, The Minneapolis Institute of Art and The Walker Art Center. This knack for creating immersive spaces has moved to the exterior and evolved into Northern Holler LLC, a native plant nursery and ecology-based landscaping operation. Fusing his background in art and education with his life-long interest in gardening and nature, Drum brings a multi-disciplinary approach to projects big and small under a mission ‘to heal instead of hurt’. As a certified Master Naturalist Volunteer with the University of Minnesota’s Extension Service, he maintains an active community service schedule by removing invasive plants, installing native gardens at public schools and growing plants for the City of Burnsville’s restoration efforts. Currently wearing many hats as a father, husband, artist, gardener, nurseryman, teacher and musician, Drum lives and works in Burnsville, MN.
