Prairie Dock (Silphium Terebinthinaceum)

Joey Santore of "Crime Pays, Botany Doesn't" loves this plant and calls it the "Beast of the Prairie". An amazing plant that we plowed to oblivion. Fabled to live for 100 years with roots that grow 15-30 feet deep. Beautiful flowers that shoot 8 feet high above the huge leaves in the prairie. Finches revel in the seeds. 

You can and should plant this plant all over your yard if you have full sun conditions. Its o charismatic and eye catching.
