Spotted Bee Balm (Monarda Punctata)

We treat this plant as an annual or biennial, many other nurseries sell it as a perennial. Barely native to MN, more at home in the sand field of WI. It will live for a year or 2 in heavy soils, but in disturbed sandy soils it will persist and multiple. We think the flowers look like pineapples. It is unique, edible, aromatic, funky, fun and many insects enjoy it, especially large solitary wasps, bees and beetles. A great plant for newly establishing gardens, adds early color and interest. Use the leaves in tea as medicine or throw them on pizza for an oregano like flavor.
