Do you live near a creek, pond, lake or even a retention basin? All of these areas are considered wetlands, and they are some of the most important ecosystems we have left in urban and suburban landscapes. These features are responsible for collecting, cleaning and storing our rainwater. Before our modern development a large portion of rainwater went into the groundwater via root ducts and aquafers but in the last 100 years, we have covered huge swaths of our land with impermeable surfaces such as roads, sidewalks and rooftops. Rainwater has nowhere to go but down the drains. These drains move water to our wetlands. Fostering a diverse mix of plants in these landscapes helps clean the water and create valuable habitat for insects like Dragonflies who eat mosquitoes and birds like Red Wing Blackbirds that fill our world with song. Protect the wetlands near your home by throwing a beach party featuring guests like sedges, rushes, iris, goldenrods, cardinal flower, vervain, switch grass and many more!
This kit requires Full Sun conditions with Wet moisture conditions.

Worried about design layout? Don’t be! We’ll label the plants in three categories: Matrix, Seasonal Interest and Structural. Start by arranging the structural plants 36-48” apart and then fill in the gaps with the matrix and the seasonal interest selections planting them 12-18” on center. If you need more advice or information, bring pictures of your site when you come to pick up the plants or email us and we’d be happy to offer layout recommendations.
