Grower’s Choice Oak Savanna Special Kit

Many people know the Prairies and the Big Woods but we seem to have forgotten The Oak Savanna. A beautiful landscape that tows the line between forest and grassland. Debates abound, is it a woodland? Or is it an open canopy forest? Regardless, the Oak Savana subsection of Minnesota spans 1,819,571 acres across parts of 11 different counties. It is a hugely diverse ecosystem dotted by Oaks, Pines and Poplar with an open canopy that allows a mix of grasses and forbs to populate the ground layer. Inspired by the rolling hills of Burnsville this kit shines a spotlight on a forgotten ecosystem by combining bunch grasses and prairie flowers with sun and drought tolerant woodland species. When you plant an oak you should plant it with its friends like sedges, asters and goldenrods

This kit contains 1x Oak sapling per kit.

This kit requires Full to Part Sun conditions with medium moisture conditions.

Recommended for 30 - 50 sq. ft.

Grower's Choice Garden Kits include:

1x Oak tree sapling!

32x 2.5" POWER PLUGS

With 4-8x different species depending on your kit selection.

All kits come with  30-50%  graminoids (grasses, sedges or rushes). Why? It’s not just filler. Graminoids serve many functions including creating habitat and food for wildlife, building healthy soil structures, holding up top heavy forbs and acting as negative space for the human eye to rest in garden designs.

PRICE: $125

Oak saplings are Bur Oak, Red Oak or White Oak. Grower’s choice based on current inventory. Oak saplings are 1-3 years old, between 8”-24” in a grow bag or pot.

More Info About Grower’s Choice Kits:

There's only one hitch…we pick the plants. Just like chef's choice in a restaurant you ask the expert to curate the best selection for you. The plants in your kit will be based on current inventory, prioritizing a multi-season bloom range with a variety of leaf textures and complementary flower colors.

Worried about design layout? Don’t be! We’ll label the plants in three categories: Matrix, Seasonal Interest and Structural. Start by arranging the structural plants 36-48” apart and then fill in the gaps with the matrix and the seasonal interest selections planting them 12-18” on center. If you need more advice or information, bring pictures of your site when you come to pick up the plants or email us and we’d be happy to offer layout recommendations.
