Blue Salvia (Salvia Azurea)
$3.50
Massively underplanted and underappreciated. The ONLY salvia species native to the Midwest with most of its cousins being inhabitants of the southwest USA. Grows 5 feet tall in average soil with deep tap roots. The flowers are stunning and shocking to encounter in late summer as we turn from coneflowers to goldenrod season. NO ONE EATS THIS PLANT as its leaves have a pungent odor so safe for deer and rabbit throughfares. Loves dry sandy hot conditions but can manage in a fair amount of shade. Mix with other tall forbs and tall grass prairie grasses, as this is a "SKINNY" plant with naked knees. Hummingbirds and bees adore this plant. Should be planted in more native gardens.
